~ A profound or notable transformation.

While visiting my hometown of South Shields after a long, transformative period of my life, I found great peace and pleasure in walking on the beach, watching the waves forming, rolling and crashing on the shore before withdrawing and rejoining the ocean.

My walks were often accompanied by visits to a wonderful little Cafe named “Sea Change”. This beautiful and unique place gives job opportunities to young adults with learning difficulties and also holds great appreciation for local artists and musicians, offering a place for them to perform and display their works. The staff are all wonderfully friendly, they serve a 100% Plant-based menu and the best coffee in town. Fantastic.

I was so fond of my walks and coffee stops that I was inspired to create a textured painting portraying the rolling waves and smooth sands of our beloved beach, using real South Shields sand. (Which I later found out is not strictly legal…) Furthermore, I found Sea Change Cafe to be such an inspiration, that I felt compelled to name the piece after it and then donate it to them.

Some time later, I returned to my Wife’s hometown of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, which is also located on a famously beautiful coastline. To pay tribute to my second home on the other side of the world, I made Sea Change 2, this time using sand from the shores of Ha Long, and mounted it in a frame that was hand-crafted by my local friend from repurposed timber from old dismantled fishing boats that once sailed on the bay.

How incredibly lucky I am to have not only one, but two ever so special homes by the ocean, on two opposite sides of the world.
