SALVAGE MASKS

These three masks / busts, although created almost ten years ago when I was a Fine Art Student, still remain as what I deem to be some of my most creative and uniquely weird experiments…

A profound impression was made upon me, after visiting a fantastic Chapman Brothers Exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Most notably, “The Chapman Family Collection”. A series of thirty-four primitive masks, carvings and icons, ominously lit, emitting silent, grotesque menace.

At this time, I had been exploring abstract sculpture and had began working with salvaged materials. I would make day-trips to scrap yards, abandon buildings and flea markets, filling bags with items of intrigue of which I would tinker with, dissect and juxtapose into Frankenstein-esque Sculptures.

These three faces were constructed with debris scavenged from the beach in my hometown.
