DEPTH’S COLUMN

I made this sculpture many moons ago when studying a Foundation Diploma in Ceramics. The first piece in what has organically become a long-running theme of interest in my work, exploring geological erosion patterns caused by the ocean. During the research period of this project, I spent a great deal of time exploring the rocky areas of the North East coastline where I grew up, sketching and photographing the various patches of eroded rock and studying them in 3D clay forms back at the workshop.

Delving into a more abstract field, I applied the interesting surface patterns inspired by the rocks to less natural, geometrical forms, eventually building a selection of tall, thin columns. This was the largest and most beautiful. Significantly more so after I applied a magnificent teal / ocean blue glaze.
